Paint your shutters for instant curb appeal!

Ugly green shutters and overgrown landscaping = no curb appeal
New landscaping and painted shutters = curb appeal wow!

We still have a long way to go on our “good bones” home exterior, but this was a pretty simple DIY on those old green shutters.

We purchased our home 8 months ago and spent the better portion of that time on the interior. But now it is Spring and time to tackle the lackluster curb appeal. These shutters are vinyl and so easy to remove and paint. There are a few tricks to making it easier, so learn from my trials and errors!

Here are the supplies you will need:

  • Crowbar or prying tool
  • Snippers (I used my hedging snips)
  • Hammer
  • Power washer or or hose with a power nozzle
  • Pliers
  • Spray paint specifically made for painting vinyl or plastic
  • Shutter fasteners

First, remove the shutters

Old fasteners can be fussy about being removed :-/

Tonya’s two cents! Be armed with a can of good bug spray as critters just love to live behind shutters.

Use a crowbar to pull the fasteners out from the house.

To remove the old, janky fasteners, snip the heads off with your snippers and then pull them from the back of the shutter with your pliers.

Clean the gutters thoroughly with a power washer or good hose nozzle. I also used vinegar and some old rags for stubborn dirt.

Here is the paint I used and the tool that I think everyone should own if they love DIY

This is a fantastic product
This gun-style handle works with any spray paint and makes it so easy!

Paint each shutter using two light coats of paint and let dry for at least 4 hours.

Get a few extra fasteners

I learned the hard way that boo-boos happen. Such as hanging a shutter upside down and having to remove it. Sigh…

Tap the fasteners in the hole and maneuver them into the existing holes on your house and simply tap them in. Easy peasy!

Get fasteners to match your color.
We got these at Home Depot
