Build a shelf to transform an awkward space above a window

So there is a large window in my totally remodeled kitchen that I just couldn’t make myself get rid of. It lets in so natural light. And, it’s where my dog loves to birdwatch!

But it left the most crazy awkward space above it and to the right. The beautiful painted cabinets (tutorial coming soon), just seemed to end and then abruptly begin again. What is a girl to do? Slap some paint on those walls and build a shelf!

I found some simple brackets at Home Depot and spray painted them gold. Then, I cut a 1″ by 10″ pine board to the length of the window. I wanted the shelf to look finished so I added some fancy schmancy trim using liquid nails and some finishing nails.

I filled in the nail holes with caulk and allow it to dry. I then primed and painted the walls and the shelf the same color as the cabinets – Benjamin Moore Mozart Blue. The shelf was attached to the top of the window trim and brackets for strength.

I am so happy with the finished result! The shelf now displays some of my mother’s blue and white antique china pieces and gives the room the visual continuity that it was lacking.
